If the substances you consume, or your behaviour or attitude is getting you into trouble or having a negative impact on your life, The River Rehab may be an important option for you to consider. Not only will we provide you with the tools that you need, but we will also give you access to customized levels of treatment that will enable you to literally reinvent your life.
The evidence shows that the more time you spend in rehab, the better your chances of a positive outcome becomes. Spending 12 weeks in residential rehab gives you the time you need to learn positive habits and behaviours to sustain your recovery. We fully recommend the 12-week program for clients who have chosen an intensive program and our 4-week program for those who require less in residence treatment. Rest assured, we will customize a program based on your needs, budget and treatment goals.
The River treats all substance dependencies, including alcohol, cocaine, crack, crystal meth (AKA Ice), ketamine, heroin, methadone, Subutex, morphine, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, psychedelics, ecstasy, solvents, and legal (prescribed) medication addictions.
We are also greatly experienced and qualified in treating Process & Behavior Addictions such as sex, gambling, online gaming, shopping, food, exercise etc.
Rehab does not cure addiction, and any rehab claiming to do so is providing information that is misleading. Living free from addiction is referred to as being in recovery. Treatment gives you the tools and support you need to live life in recovery, minimize relapse and allow you to live a life free from the tyranny of compulsive and addictive behavior.
The River Rehab works in close partnership with a medical doctor, who is supported by a 24/7 onsite team of nurses with specialized training in addictions. Our doctor is on call, and when off-site, his practice and home is located within 20 minutes of our facility.
Yes, it is common for family members to travel with their loved ones to The River Rehab. During the first few weeks of residential treatment, we discourage visitation for at least 4 weeks. We do, however, ensure that any family member that travels to Chiang Mai has the opportunity to speak to a family therapist (either on a one-off or recurring basis, as suits the needs of the family member). We believe that successful outcomes are substantially improved when family members are engaged in their loved one’s recovery.
Yes, absolutely. We are happy for you to use your Smartphone, iPad / tablet or laptop while you’re with us. However, we ask that they’re handed in during the day and that you only use them during the evenings.
It is very difficult to ask you not to speak with your friends, family or business colleagues, though it is therapeutically valuable that our clients remain focused on their program. However, we understand that there are also circumstances that mean you need to speak to loved ones or colleagues during various hours of the day and we will support you with such circumstances by arranging the time for you to schedule important calls, etc.
In Thailand, the weather is typically hot by day and warm at night. All our indoor spaces, including your bedrooms, have air conditioning, but many clients prefer to spend time outside. Typically, our clients wear shorts and loose trousers (pants) and many females wear cotton dresses or shorts. Short-sleeved shirts and t-shirts are popular too. Comfortable footwear, especially shoes that slip on and off, or tongs / flip flops, etc. There is no need to dress formal or smart. Everything is relaxed, comfort focused and easy going.
The River will collect your laundry 3 times a week and return it to you two days later, so you don’t need to worry too much about over or under packing. Enough underwear for one week is more than enough. Daily exercise and other holistic activities such as yoga and pilates take a prominent place in our treatment program, and we encourage (but don’t enforce) regular attendance (you’ll receive 2 personal training sessions a week), so do pack enough gym clothes and sneakers.
We also have a swimming pool and there’ll be downtime for you to sunbathe, should you want to. You do not need to bring any towels, but please bring swimming suits, tongs, flip, etc. Also, we suggest you bring sunscreen.
We will also have excursions once a week that could be a physical activity, such as playing with elephants or trekking through the jungle, so pack clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and comfortable light shoes for outdoor activities or time spent exploring. Sandals are also popular.
Feel free to bring your everyday jewelry pieces with you. You should feel comfortable with what you’re in, and for many people, this includes their jewelry. However, it is recommended that any precious and valuable pieces remain at home. While we do have a safe to keep things in, they’re unnecessary.
Toiletries: Please bring your own toiletries and hygiene products, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, shaving materials, basic makeup, hairbrush, etc. We do have in-house toiletries available and we can purchase anything you’re missing from local shops. Hair Dryers are also available in the rooms. Please note, we ask you to NOT bring any products that contain alcohol, such as certain mouthwash, perfumes, and colognes and also aerosols. All products found to contain alcohol will be held in our safe and returned to you once you leave.
Medications: You are allowed to continue using your doctor-prescribed medications while in rehab, but please do bring proof of your prescription. Please keep all your pills in the original packaging so that they are not to be unauthorized narcotics.
Downtime amusement: While much of your days are spent in scheduled programs there will be plenty of downtime. We have super fast Wi-Fi throughout the resort and we encourage you to bring your own iPads, mobile devices, and laptops, which can be used in the evenings and handed in after breakfast. Our residents have a large TV with Apple TV and Netflix connected already, though you’ll be able to log in and use your own account should you wish to. The River has its own library of books, but it’s suggested that you bring something to read. Reading has been shown to help reduce stress, manage anxiety and overcome with depression.
When packing for The River Rehab, here is a list of the things you should leave behind:
Alcohol or drugs: It might seem self-explanatory, but some clients may try to sneak in a last-minute hit, fix, pill, can, bottle, etc. However, your belongings will be searched before entering rehab.
Alcohol or drug paraphernalia: This includes anything that advertises or glorifies using alcohol or drugs.
Weapons: There is absolutely no need to bring any knives or weapons with you to Thailand or to The River Rehab. It’s a very safe place and weapons won’t be tolerated. They will be confiscated and destroyed.
Toiletries that contain alcohol: Leave any alcohol-based products at home, such as certain mouthwashes, nail polish remover, perfumes, and aerosols.
Food and drinks: It is requested that you don’t bring any food or snacks or drinks to The River Rehab. We provide everything you need and if you feel you want extra snacks then these can be arranged for you, if they’re not considered as a conflict to your recovery. Please note, many clients may present with addiction to food or have challenges around anorexia or bulimia, and we will be assisting them to recover too. Therefore, all food and snacks into The River Rehab will be strictly controlled.
Large sums of cash, including expensive jewellery: The River Rehab is an all-inclusive experience and although some spending money may be necessary when we go on trips (for souvenirs, etc.), in this day and age, cash simply isn’t necessary. Bring your debit/credit cards and withdraw cash as and when you need it from the ATM. Also, expensive or sentimental jewellery pieces are unnecessary during The River Rehab experience, and they’re much safer left at home or with friends
Yes, we have plenty of smoking spaces available to those or smoke. Please note that cigarettes are widely available in Thailand, so you can purchase more if you run out. We would like to encourage our clients to quit smoking should they want to and will facilitate this should anyone want to stop whilst with us.
We’re sorry, but this is not an option at The River Rehab unless it’s a Service Dog or a Support Dog.
If there is something else you need to know, please just contact us via info@TheRiverRehab.com or give us a call.
We accept multiple types of payment methods. Please contact to enquire regarding your payment preference.

Glossary Of Terms

This is the process we undertake prior to your admission in order to ascertain your specific requirements. We also aim to ensure that our program is a strong match for your specific challenges.
This is the process of weaning your body off the substances it is physically addicted to, and it applies particularly to alcohol or heroin (or other opiates). Cocaine and Ice (crystal meth) do not require high levels of medication to withdraw from; opiate detoxification will be managed closely to reduce the level of physical discomfort during withdrawal, and the same applies to alcohol detoxification.
This term generally describes a residential experience, e.g. living permanently at a facility for an extended period of time. Being at Rehab involves a broad range of individual and group therapies, as well as physical and mindfulness training (programs offered at different facilities vary considerably). The objective of Rehab is to work with clients to achieve emotional and physical changes, such that they are able to live lives of sobriety. At The River, we focus heavily on unleashing creativity (what we call creative recovery) giving clients the tools to invent a new life.
Therapy can take many forms. In addiction treatment, therapy refers to the treatment of underlying physiological, psychological and behavioral conditions. Current research has revealed that addiction, more often than not, is caused by more than one underlying factor. Addiction therapy aims to diagnose these underlying causes so that therapy can treat the person as a whole, rather than treating specific symptoms in isolation.
This term refers to a client’s extended treatment (after completion of the residential program). Aftercare is a critical part of a client’s recovery, as it aims to ‘reintegrate’ the person into everyday life while ensuring that the foundations of recovery are maintained and developed.
